Prepared Statement failing to bind

Keywords´╝Ü php mysql database

Question:

I am trying to write to a table in PHP, but the prepared statement parameters aren't binding. The parameters in the statement are placeholders, but everything is present in the actual application.

I've already tried what I can find on google, which includes wrapping the bind in an if statement, but that does not work (the program terminates before calling the contents of the if else).

It also writes successfully if I don't use a prepared statement.

$statement = $conn->prepare(`INSERT INTO X (a, b, c, d) VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?);`);
 $statement->bind_param('s', $_GET["a"]);
 $statement->bind_param('s', $_GET["b"]);
 $statement->bind_param('s', $_GET["c"]);
 $statement->bind_param('s', $_GET["d"]);
 $statement->execute();
Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to a member function bind_param() on boolean in C:\xampp\htdocs\submit.php:14 Stack trace: #0 {main} thrown in C:\xampp\htdocs\submit.php on line 14
